It’s the best time of the year for boating in Texas-Spring!

Spring is here and with it the perfect temps for getting the winter dirt off the boat and get out there.  The humidity is low, and we don’t need the a/c yet.  It’s time to get out there and enjoy the weather.

So, what is there to do?  It’s a good time to plan an overnight to Galveston try Moody Gardens Marina or Pelicans Rest. Both have marinas and there is a lot to do especially at Moody Gardens and both have restaurants on site.  Dock Reservations are a must for both.

If you’re a sailor, one of the best weekends my family  ever had on a boat was sailing after a norther hit down to Galveston, staying at Moody Gardens Marina and then the winds returned back to the south before we left and we sailed all the way home. It was down wind both ways. If you prefer just to get away and anchor out, Offats Bayou is super deep and you can anchor just about anywhere. There is also a great marina there with a super restaurant, Pelicans Rest.

Or if you want to do a weekend anchoring out. Try anchoring out at  Redfish Island the first night.  Sometime the next day make the 20 mile  across the Trinty bay trip and  anchor out in Double Bayou and take in that eclectic little fishing town and the secluded anchorage up the bayou. Keep an eye out for the little gators that are up the bayou. If you want to break up the trip over to Double Bayou, Smith Point is also a good anchorage.

Further up the bay towards the Fred Hartman Bridge at the North Boaters Cut is the entrance to Cedar Bayou. Also a very cool but remote anchorage. No facilities there but a great place to let a few days pass by.

While you are up that direction, the north side of Houston Yacht Club has a nice anchorage also. Last to not least if you just don’t have much time and just need to get away from the dock, just anchor out in Clear Lake.

If you don’t really want to cook as much, there are places like Pier 6 in San Leon that have a docks and plenty of other choices to go to around Clear Lake.

Take advantage of our best boating season. A weekend on the water can feel like a mini vacation. This is the best time to take advantage of it!
