Description

The Sun Odyssey 385 is designed to make cruising simpler, safer, and more enjoyable for sailors of all experience levels. This capable 38‑footer offers a straightforward, confidence‑building sailing experience without unnecessary complexity. With a lifting keel option, three rigging configurations, four interior layouts, and multiple wood finishes, the 385 adapts easily to a wide range of cruising styles and preferences.

Relaunched as an evolution of the proven Sun Odyssey 380, the 385 incorporates targeted refinements similar to those introduced on the larger 415. The original 380 earned praise for its balanced sailing characteristics, strong performance upwind, extensive feature set, and Jeanneau’s signature walk‑around cockpit. The 385 builds on this foundation with thoughtful updates that enhance comfort, versatility, and overall cruising capability.

Four Layout Options Below Deck

Below deck, the basic layout concept of the 380 model has been retained, with some updates to the salon. Owners can choose between two‑ or three‑cabin configurations, each available with one or two heads. The optional second head can be added to the forward cabin as an ensuite. In the two‑cabin versions, the starboard aft cabin is replaced by a large storage locker ideal for cruising gear. The two-cabin configurations also offer an expanded aft head with a separate shower compartment. Altogether, the model provides four distinct layout options to suit a wide range of sailing and lifestyle needs.

An Interior Designed to Be Shared

The interior of the Sun Odyssey 385 is thoughtfully designed to create a warm, comfortable environment ideal for daily living and extended cruising. Owners can tailor the space to their preferences with four available layout configurations and a selection of elegant wood finishes.

The redesigned salon features two inviting seating areas on the starboard side, positioned around a versatile central module that functions as a coffee table, storage console, or navigation desk. Built‑in shelving and enclosed cabinetry provide a clean, custom look while keeping essentials secure underway. Rounded furniture edges, an unobstructed passage through the salon, and continuous handrails leading forward enhance both comfort and safety when moving throughout the interior.

The owner’s cabin forward offers generous storage and a large rectangular berth set at an angle for easier access and improved use of space. This smart layout also allows for an optional second ensuite head, adding convenience for longer voyages.

Aft guest cabins deliver true comfort with large berths, natural light and sea views that create a welcoming retreat for family and friends.

Overall, the adaptable living spaces, abundant storage, and well‑planned lighting make life aboard the Sun Odyssey 385 simple, practical, and exceptionally enjoyable.

Redesigned, Wider Stern, Creating More Space for the Helmsman

Jeanneau’s redesign of the Sun Odyssey 385 focuses on meaningful improvements to hull form and cockpit comfort. The aft sections of the hull have been reshaped, extending the maximum beam farther aft and increasing the seating width at both helm stations by approximately three inches. The freeboards at the stern now feature a subtle concave profile, echoing the modern styling of the larger Sun Odyssey 415 and 455 models. These refinements not only give the 385 a more contemporary look but also provide the helmsman with noticeably improved freedom of movement.

The signature walk‑around cockpit remains a defining feature of the series. Side decks flow seamlessly from the cockpit to the foredeck without steps, ensuring safe, unobstructed passage for crew and guests.

Revised Sail Plan with Extended Mast and Larger Mainsail

Jeanneau, in collaboration with Marc Lombard Yacht Design, has refined the sail plan for the Sun Odyssey 385. The mast height has been increased by more than 10 inches compared to the Sun Odyssey 380, and the mainsail area has been enlarged by over two square meters to enhance overall performance. An overlapping genoa remains the standard headsail, with a self‑tacking jib available as an optional configuration.

The Swivel Keel Option Remains Available

The Sun Odyssey 385 offers a versatile range of keel configurations to suit different cruising needs. Fixed‑keel models are available with either a standard 6'7" keel or a 5'1" shoal‑draft keel. The proven swing‑keel option from the Sun Odyssey 380 also remains available, allowing the draft to be hydraulically reduced from 8'9" to just 4'3". Paired with twin rudders, the swing‑keel configuration enables the boat to safely rest aground when equipped with additional mud supports.

An Exterior Designed for Cruising with Full Confidence

The Sun Odyssey 385 features a deck layout designed to be equally enjoyable underway and at anchor. Each area is thoughtfully arranged to support smooth handling, safe movement, and easy day‑to‑day living aboard. Wide walk‑around sidedecks, free of backstays, create clearly defined zones for sail management and relaxation while ensuring unobstructed flow throughout the boat.

The cockpit is inviting and comfortable, with high seatbacks that provide excellent support while cruising and exceptional comfort when at rest. Designed as a true social space, it encourages shared moments at sea and relaxed enjoyment during stopovers. The interior is accessed by just three steps, reflecting Jeanneau’s commitment to making life aboard simpler, safer, and more intuitive in every detail.
